The Raiders are reportedly attempting to lure former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch out of retirement, but how realistic is such a scenario?

By all accounts, Marshawn Lynch is thoroughly enjoying retirement, as he now gets to do whatever he wants and pursue other interests. However, at least one team thinks they can lure the former Seattle Seahawks‘ running back to the gridiron.

As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Oakland Raiders are attempting to persuade Lynch to come out of retirement and don their famous silver and black uniform. In theory, this seems unlikely, but the Raiders do represent a different angle to most teams.

As most people are aware, Lynch is originally from the Oakland area. In addition, he played his college football for the California Golden Bears, at nearby Berkeley.

Now it should be noted Schefter can be hit-and-miss, when it comes to reporting rumors. However, it would make sense that if there was one place Lynch could be persuaded to play, it would be in his hometown.

This doesn’t mean it is definitely going to happen, or that it is even feasible. For a start, while the five-time Pro Bowler may genuinely be considering returning, he is renowned for being extremely unpredictable.

In addition, there is the issue of what would be required, in order for Lynch to play for the Raiders. With the Seahawks still owning his NFL rights, he would either have to be traded or released.

In this respect, Schefter points to the long-standing relationship between Seahawks’ general manager John Schneider and Reggie McKenzie, his counterpart in Oakland. They two men previously worked together in the Green Bay Packers’ front office.

One final factor which could come into play, is Lynch’s place in NFL history. With him currently sitting on 9,112 rushing yards, returning to play and reaching the 10,000-yard mark, would strengthen his case to eventually be elected into the Hall of Fame. (Although, it is acknowledged he doesn’t care how he is perceived by others, whether it be within football or in general.)

Overall though, while most of us would enjoy the opportunity to see the 2007 12th overall draft pick play again, the odds are still against him returning. Having said that, if his unpredictable nature is anything to go by, you wouldn’t rule anything out where this particular individual is concerned.
