Eastern Washington Eliminated By Georgetown 84-74

Tyler Harvey did what Tyler Harvey does, but it wasn’t enough as the Eastern Washington Eagles’ season came to an end at the hands of the Georgetown Hoyas.

Eastern controlled the game for most of the first half, lead by Harvey, who had 13 points in the first 15 minutes. Including some plays that bring back memories of another mid-major tournament superstar.

EWU lead by as many as seven and couldn’t seem to miss. The above shot by Harvey gave them a 29-25 lead with 5:47 to go. However, that was the last moment the Eagles would look like they were going to win this game.

Next Georgetown possession, Jabril Trawick hit a three-pointer to bring the Hoyas within one. As Harvey brought the ball back down the floor, he rolled his ankle and was called for a travel. Trawick was excited by the turnover, despite the fact that he did nothing to cause it, and chest bumped/ shoved Harvey to the ground, rolling Harvey’s ankle again.

The officials reviewed the play but decided not to call a technical or flagrant foul. It’s hard to say what kind of impact the no-call had on the psyche of the Eastern players, but the Hoyas would go on an 18-2 run after the play.

The Eagles went into the half trailing 43-33, and the lead ballooned to as much as 23 in the second half. Eastern inexplicably went possessions without get Tyler Harvey a touch, and then when he did, he forced a few unadvised shots, even for him.

However, with the season on the line, the Eagles had one last run in them. They went on a 21-8 run, sparked by four consecutive points from freshman Sir Washington off the bench and concluded by Tyler Harvey scoring four points on one possession.

The shot brought Eastern to within single digits at 73-64 with 1:38 to go. But once again, the Eagles weren’t able to capitalize on Harvey’s highlight play.

The two teams traded free throws before Trawick ended the game with a dunk at the buzzer, and the Eastern Washington Eagles’ season came to an end. A frustrating and disappointing end. EWU just didn’t play their best basketball, or anything close to it.One of the nation’s highest scoring offenses strung together one bad possession after another with bad ball-movement and worse shot selection.

There isn’t really a silver lining to a season-ending loss like this, however, the good news is that Tyler Harvey will be back. As will Venky Jois, the only other Eagle who played anywhere near well enough for them to advance.

If they Harvey and Jois continue to improve at their current pace along with freshmen Bogdan Bliznyuk, this team could be a tough-out come next March.
