Seattle Seahawks A Possible Landing Spot For Andre Johnson?

Reports from the Houston Chronicle are that Texans WR Andre Johnson laughed at coach Bill O’brien after being told he would not start for the team in 2015.

It’s fair to say Johnson’s time in Houston has come to an end. Could it also be fair to say he might be on track to join the Seattle Seahawks?

Pretend you are Andre Johnson for a second. You have earned over $88 million in your 12-year career, but you have played in just two playoff games. Would you choose to play for the highest bidder, or for a team that you know you can contribute for, and you know can win a championship?

I don’t know the guy, so I can’t speak for what his priorities are at this point in his life. But what I do know, is that Seattle can give him more playing time than anyone, and a better chance to win a Super Bowl in the next couple of years than anyone.

From Seattle’s perspective, it’s all about the money. If Bleacher Report writer Jason Cole’s information is accurate, then the Seahawks might be out of the running already. Cole says that there are multiple teams out there ready to pay Johnson $10 million or more.

But if Seattle can come to a reasonable compromise, say somewhere from $4-6 million, for one or two years, the rewards should far outweigh the risks.

More from Seattle Seahawks

While Johnson is no longer among the NFL’s best pass-catchers, he would fill one of the only holes in the Seahawks’ roster.

He may not be as explosive as he once was. However, things like soft hands, good-route running and a massive frame don’t go away.

Doug Baldwin is the closest thing Russell Wilson has to a security blanket. And this isn’t meant to knock Baldwin, but every QB should have at least one receiver who he knows can get open on EVERY play, either with their size, or speed. While Baldwin is a good NFL receiver, the Seahawks don’t currently have that guy.

Of course, this is all contingent upon Houston releasing the star receiver, although that does appear to be the likeliest outcome given that he will cost upwards of $15 million against the cap in 2015, which will ward off most, if not all possible trade partners.

Overall, the chances of the Seattle Seahawks signing Andre Johnson are probably pretty small. Other teams such as the Indianapolis Colts or the Baltimore Ravens also make a lot of sense. But it definitely is possible.
