Today’s The Day

Did you sleep last night? If you did, did you wake up before your alarm today? If so, that’s understandable. Big day, today. Since, you know, today’s the day and all.

The day. Super Bowl Sunday, starring, for the second year in a row, the Seattle Seahawks. My favorite team, your favorite team. The defending champs! All is forgiven if you didn’t get to sleep last night. Not an easy thing to prepare yourself for, this here Super Bowl.

Used to be we’d only dream about days like this. But then the Seahawks went to (and lost) the Super Bowl, giving fans a new kind of hunger. A seemingly-unsatiable desire to see the ‘Hawks win it all. Last year we got that. But that hasn’t stopped us from wanting more.

You know who else wants to see the Seahawks win another title? Russell Wilson. Earl Thomas. Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Marshawn Lynch. Those are the guys who have the power to make our dreams come true, again. It’s their names, and the names of their teammates, that we’ll be screaming out all afternoon.

This should still feel fresh and new, given that we this whole “Seahawks in the Super Bowl” phenomenon is still less than a decade old. But this is also the third time in nine years that the ‘Hawks have won the NFC. Not that Seattleites can ever truly get used to a successful sports team, just that the idea of the Seahawks as one of the preeminent football teams of this day and age is starting to stick in our collective mind.

If last year felt like the start of something, then merely being here again should be some kind of affirmation. The Seahawks are playing in their second straight Super Bowl after dominating the NFC for the second straight season. They’re really amazing, these Seahawks. Still one of the youngest teams in the NFL, and probably the best. Still slaying veteran quarterback dragons at every turn.

Not that Tom Brady is an easy target. The ‘Hawks have made their name against Brady types, but that doesn’t mean this one will be a shoo-in. The New England Patriots are the AFC’s best team by a fair margin. Make no mistake, they’re plenty formidable. If they’re Super Bowl champs at the end of the day we should be upset, not stunned.

But your gut isn’t buying it. Neither is mine. The Green Bay Packers were supposed to be NFC champs, remember? But then they weren’t, because the Seahawks willed it to be that way. The Seahawks played their worst football of the year at the apparent worst time. All they needed to win was a huge miracle, and so that’s what they got. Your gut isn’t buying into the possibility of a loss because the Seahawks haven’t yet given your gut a reason to.

Prepare yourselves. The Super Bowl is today, and having been there before doesn’t make being there again any less exciting. If anything, today’s jitters are more severe than those of a year ago. Prepare to shake. Prepare to scream. And yes, prepare to celebrate.
