Washington Football: What you need to know for BYU 9/29

Washington Football resumes this week in Seattle as the Huskies host the Brigham Young University Cougars. Emerald City Swagger has all you need to know.
It’s a Washington football Saturday. Emerald City Swagger presents, what you need to know in order to enjoy the Washington Huskies non-conference game against the BYU Cougars today. Whether you are going to see the game in person, or staying at home and watching on television we have you covered.

Last Week
Brigham Young defeated McNeese State in Provo 30-3. After falling behind 3-0 entering the second quarter, the Cougars scored 30 straight points to put the game away.

BYU didn’t exactly overwhelm McNeese State with their offense racking up a total of 291 yards against the FCS school. Quarterback Tanner Magnum was 15 of 25 for 118 yards and a touchdown in the win. Rather, BYU let their running game take the lead. Lopini Katoa, Squally Canada, and Matt Hadley combined for 144 yards of BYU’s 161 total on 23 carries (6.26 average).
On defense, BYU was exceedingly stingy, holding their visitors only 207 yards and no touchdowns. Four turnovers, two sacks and six tackles for loss were more than enough to keep the Cowboys at bay.
Washington continued their run to a PAC-12 North division title with a 27-20 win over Arizona State University. The game was closer than Huskies head coach Chris Petersen would have liked, but a conference win is a conference win.
ASU only had 268 yards of offense for the day. Huskies linebacker, Ben Burr-Kirven was like the internet last week, everywhere. He made 20 tackles on his way to a second consecutive PAC-12 Defensive Player of the Week award. BBK was forced to make all those tackles because the Sun Devils ran the ball 40 times for 164 yards.
Speaking of the running game, Washington turned theirs up a notch. Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed led the way with a combined 157 yards on 31 attempts. While quarterback Jake Browning didn’t have his best game against a good pass defense, he still threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns.
This week
BYU is a good football team but they struggle on offense. They are ranked 117th out of 129 BCS schools, averaging 320 yards per game. Their defense, however, is ranked 29th, allowing only nine touchdowns in four games. They did beat number six Wisconsin on the road two weeks ago, so UW can’t take their opponents lightly.
Now that the Huskies have gotten their running game going the past two weeks, they can control this game. Browning doesn’t have beat BYU, he only needs to manage the offense and avoid turnovers. Washington’s defense is the best Brigham Young will see in 2018. They should easily handle whatever offense Brigham Young can muster.
