Washington Football: What we learned from Coach Petersen’s presser 9/24
By Matt Barry
After a second straight conference win, Washington football head coach Chris Petersen held his weekly Monday morning press conference. Here are three things we learned from it.
Washington football exorcised the Arizona State demons that had plagued them over the last 12 meetings by beating the Sun Devils 27-20 on Saturday. UW Huskies head coach Chris Petersen discussed his thoughts on the win and what’s ahead in his Monday press conference. Here are three takeaways:
Pleased with another solid conference win
Petersen mentioned that he was happy with the win against a good team. He mentioned how the defense has been playing well all year and shut down Arizona State’s star receiver N’Keal Harry, The junior was held to five catches for 20 yards. He did say that there were some tackling issues on a 42-yard punt return by Harry that led to a score.

Petersen said it is hard to win games in a tough league and any win is a good one. The Huskies will have to treat the game this week with BYU with the same sense of urgency and focus.
Jake Browning had more time to be Jake Browning
Petersen seemed to be pleased with his offense. Quarterback Jake Browning had more time in the pocket and was able to move within the pocket to make plays with his arm rather than take off running. The offensive line has continued to improve and show cohesion week to week and it showed on Saturday.
The Huskies coach said Browning is a good quarterback that just needs the time to get the ball out to receivers. If he has that time, the offense will score points and the turnovers will lessen. Overall, it was a more complete performance from Browning and the offensive line.
BYU provides a tough challenge Saturday
Coach Petersen spoke glowingly about #20 BYU, who comes in 3-1 having already beaten then sixth-ranked Wisconsin in Madison. The Cougars are a difficult team to play because they are solid and technically sound in all phases of the game. They can beat you on the ground and through the air. In addition, the Cougars play good defense.
Petersen’s main concern is the Brigham Young offense and having to defend an “option-type” setup. The coach continued by saying that BYU’s offense will make his defense play assignment-sound football. Washington’s defense has been stout and physical but will need to be solid against the Cougars. BYU has a nice system and runs it well, which makes them hard to prepare for, in one week.
