The Washington State Cougars shut out Colorado 28-0 in a game called “less pathetic” by head coach Mike Leach.

The Washington State Cougars rebounded after their shocking loss to Cal to shut out the Colorado Buffaloes at Martin Stadium.

The rain and wind swirled over the field all night, but the Washington State Cougars defense was tired of hearing about how they got creamed the week before, and took out their angst on the Buffaloes.

By the third quarter, the Cougars defense had so thoroughly shut down Buffaloes quarterback Steven Montez that Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre pulled him and sent his backup into the storm.

Literally and figuratively, the Colorado offense couldn’t stand up to the storm. Colorado running back Philip Lindsey rushed for 98 yards on 29 carries and the Buffalo offense only mustered 178 total yards, fewer than Washington State Cougars rushing yards.

Perhaps most impressive was the Cougars’ secondary. Tavares Martin was out for the game, so Desmond Patmon and Tay Martin were pressed into action and didn’t allow anything in the air. The pass rush, led by Frankie Luvu, hounded both Colorado quarterbacks all night.

Luke Falk and the offense didn’t look exactly sharp all game, throwing into the wind and rain, but they did manage 14 points in the second quarter that all but sealed it early. Falk pitched in on the running game, adding 41 yards to the Cougars’ total of 194 rushing yards. They got it done in bad weather conditions on a night when their defense more than held up their end of the bargain.

The number-15 Washington State Cougars will head to Tucson to face the Arizona Wildcats next week, hoping to build on their recent defensive revelation. With Washington inactive this week, they gained ground on their cross-state rival and kept a winner-keep-all Apple Cup on the table for the end of the season.
