The Sounders battled the LA Galaxy, with their new (old?) coach Sigi Schmid to a 0-0 tie at the StubHub Center.

The Sounders couldn’t put their attacking plays together against former longtime coach Sigi Schmid yesterday, but still kept their unbeaten streak alive with a 0-0 tie in LA. The Galaxy re-hired former Sounders coach Sigi Schmid last week, as the team transitions to a new direction for the future.

Schmid coached the Galaxy from 1999 to 2004, and of course coached the Sounders since their entrance into MLS in 2009 until his ouster last season before Seattle took the MLS Cup with new coach Brian Schmetzer at the the helm.

The Sounders were rounding into form after a disappointing first half of the season, with a 3-0 victory over San Jose and a stunning 4-3 comeback win over DC United at CenturyLink Field this month, despite missing several key players for international duty.

Jordan Morris, who helped the US Men’s National Team capture the Gold Cup championship with a goal against Jamaica last week, was relatively quiet in this match against LA. He entered as a second-half substitute while Clint Dempsey played the full 90 for Seattle. Despite LA defender Jelle Van Damme earning a second yellow card in the 86th minute, the Sounders couldn’t capitalize in the waning moments and settled for a draw on the road.

The scoreless tie was a departure from the norm for the Sounders, who dominated rebuilding LA 4-2 and 3-0 in their last two trips to the StubHub Center.

The Sounders will head to the Midwest to take on Minnesota United, an expansion team in MLS this year. The Loons (have you ever heard a loon?) are in 10th place in the Western Conference, but hold a 6-5-2 record at home, including a 4-0 demolition of hapless DC United. Seattle will meet the Loons for the first time next Saturday.
