Roman Torres’ former club have been in contact about re-signing him, but does the towering defender actually want to leave the Seattle Sounders?

Roman Torres is an extremely important player for the Seattle Sounders. This much was clear, when he returned to the lineup and helped solidify the defense, on their run to an unexpected MLS Cup victory last season.

However, is Torres set to leave for pastures new? Or should that be pastures old?

As reported by Spenser Davis of the excellent Sound at Heart, the towering defender’s former club wants his back. As Davis writes, Millonarios FC would apparently like to re-sign him this summer.

Although contact has been made, it is unclear at this stage who Millonarios have reached out to, i.e. Torres, his agent or the Sounders. Further, there has been no indication the Panama native even wants to go anywhere.

More from Seattle Sounders

In this respect, as noted by Davis, Torres specifically asked to leave Colombian football in 2015, leading to his move to Seattle. As such, it would be surprising if he wanted to return so soon.

Similarly, it would seem unlikely the Sounders would even want the 31-year old to leave. However, just for arguments sake, let’s play devils advocate.

As most Sounders’ fans are aware, Torres has struggled to remain healthy since coming to the Pacific Northwest. Overall, he has only started 15 of a possible 52 games.

This includes just three starts in eight games this season. And even when the Panamanian international has played, he’s not really been his usual reliable self.

In addition, Gustav Svensson has looked solid, when he’s been called upon as a replacement. The question is, at what point do the Sounders just decide Torres will never be able to contribute regularly?

Just to be clear, this is not a knock against the center back’s toughness, or even an indication the Sounders are thinking of letting him leave. In addition, no official statement has been made by anyone.

However, it will be interesting to see if this speculation has any legs. And while it still seems unlikely Torres will leave any time soon, you can never say never in the world of professional football.
