The Seattle Sounders have been far from stellar so far this season, and that continued Wednesday night as they fell to Sacramento Republic FC.

It’s been a rough go for the Sounders early in the season, and that didn’t change last night. They lost 2-1 and fell in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup. It took until extra time, but Sacramento was able to pull away in the end. Harry Shipp scored the lone goal for the Sounders.

Players and fans alike have been frustrated with the way the season has gone thus far, and understandably so. Sitting at 11th in the West is a tough pill to swallow after winning it all in 2016. It’s going to be hard to come back after digging themselves such a large hole, but they’ll certainly try.

For what it’s worth, Sacramento has been solid in the USL so far this season. They currently sit at seven wins, with both three losses and draws. They’ve also won five out of their last six, which further highlights their current hot streak. That said, it’s still up to the Sounders to start scoring more, or they’re going to find themselves racking up higher numbers in the loss column.

The lone goal that the Sounders could muster put their total for the year at a paltry eight. To put things in perspective, there are six teams in the MLS with  25+. Should Seattle continue to put up such low goal totals, it’s hard to see any sort of rebound occurring as the season progresses.

The Sounders will return home on Saturday as they look to pull out a win against D.C. United. It’s a doable task, as D.C. is in last in the Eastern Conference. It’s the perfect game to try and get back to winning ways, and hopefully, they can do so against another struggling club.
