226. Chad Kelly, QB Ole Miss

If the off-season has taught us anything, it’s that being an unproven quarterback with some tools is enough to get paid. Mike Glennon will make north of $15 million for Chicago this season. Jimmy Garoppolo could be traded for multiple first round picks. Seattle could turn Chad Kelly into a mid-round pick or two in two or three years.

Skill wise, Kelly is a Top 3 round talent. He poses the excellent arm strength, can make all the throws and show decent touch and a tight spiral on the deep ball. He runs well, adding 1000 yards rushing in his 22 career starts at Ole Miss.

Kelly can have too much faith in his arm, trying to force the ball into tight windows leading to turnovers. He also gets gun-shy at times, not trusting the protection given to him.

Off the ball, Kelly is a mess. He has torn the ACL in right knee twice, including in November of 2016. He had to be physically restrained from rushing the field of a high school football game. Additionally; a picture was released where he allegedly rolled a marijuana blunt.

Kelly also suffers from ADD, which has been said to limit what he can retain from the playbook. As a 7th round pick, Kelly is worth the gamble. If he figures it out, he can be a solid starter in the NFL, giving the Seahawks a nifty trade chip a few years down the line.

Conclusion

The 2017 Draft Class is loaded with DB’s and RB’s, which bodes well for Seattle. The team needs to add competition and impact players to both positions and are in good position to do so.

As we get deeper into the off-season, we will have a better idea of what the Seahawks need to do in the draft. The hope is that Seattle can find another offensive lineman and RB in free agency, allowing Seattle to just draft straight off their board.

The Seattle Seahawks approach to the remainder of free agency will offer more clues to what they intend to do in the draft, and perhaps, who they will target.
