The Sounders dropped another hard-luck game, this time 2-1 in Boston against the New England Revolution.

More from Seattle Sounders

The Sounders took a 1-0 lead in New England on a brilliant shot by Aaron Kovar— a commanding lead considering how well the Sounders played in the first 25 minutes. Then, in typical Sounders fashion, the game changed on a two instances of bad luck.

The Revolution earned a penalty kick when Sounders midfielder Erik Friberg got called for a handball in the penalty box. Friberg was trying to protect himself from getting hit in the stomach by crossing his arms in front of himself. After Revolution striker Lee Nguyen pounded home the penalty kick to even the game, the Sounders, unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities–again–gave up the winning goal on an unlucky play.

Defender Zach Scott blocked an entry pass to Nguyen with about 10 minutes left in the game. The ball bounced to Femi Hollinger-Janzen, a Revolution substitute, who buried a shot into the far post.

Defender Brad Evans went down with an injury and was removed from the game after getting hit in the back of the head by a liner off the foot of New England’s Kei Kamara. He was replaced by S2 star Tony Alfaro. Alfaro was drafted by the Sounders early this year out of Cal State Dominguez Hills and played well during his 60-minute audition last night, tackling attackers, intercepting passes, and even moving up to distribute the ball offensively the way Evans does.

Next: Possible Contracts for Luke Willson

It’s not time to panic yet, with summer and the designated player signing period upon them, the Sounders can still turn the season around. Last year, they went through a brutal stretch around this time, losing eight of nine games and scoring only a total of three goals, only to go on a 10-game unbeaten streak and make the playoffs. Have hope, Sounders faithful, all is not lost.
