Seahawks NFL Draft Review: Rounds 1-3
By Justin Floor
Day 2- Round 3- Pick# 94- Nick Vannett, TE, Ohio State
Glory glory hallelujah! If you’re familiar with my ramblings, you know I’m not a fan of TE3 Cooper Helfet. I just feel he belongs nowhere near an NFL roster. Well, barring catastrophic injuries, the Cooper Helfet era is over and the Nick Vannett era has begun!
Vannett was underutilized at Ohio State and will prove to be a reliable option for Russell Wilson in the short passing game. He’ll be a chain-mover on 3rd downs and a red zone threat as a 6’6” target with decent route running skills. In addition, though he is not super strong, his 250+ lb frame will be coached up by Tom Cable and I envision competent blocking skills over the course of time.
A combo tight end is extremely valuable and increasingly rare in today’s game. Vannett is going to be just that. This is a very good selection that will never please the fantasy football crowd but will be an important puzzle piece that allows the skill players to thrive with timely blocking and drive-extending catches.
Early Grade: A-
An important addition, especially with Jimmy Graham’s injury concerns and Luke Willson’s expiring contract after next season.
