Jordan Morris stayed hot for the Sounders, flipping a goal into the far post in the 63rd minute and goalkeeper Stefan Frei saved a penalty kick, but they dropped to 0-2 on the road this season with a 3-1 loss to the Rapids. The loss snapped a three-game unbeaten streak for the Sounders, who fell to 2-4-1.
Jermaine Jones, likely a constant worry for Sounders coach Sigi Schmid in the week before the match, once again proved dangerous for the Rapids. Jones scored his second goal in two games in the 20th minute. Forward Luis Solignac tipped in an easy finish in the 51st minute to drop the Sounders in a 2-0 hole.
After Morris cut the Rapids’ lead in half, Sounders forward Herculez Gomez, playing for injured forward Clint Dempsey, was called for grabbing Rapids defender Bobby Burling inside the penalty box. In a strange moment while the penalty kick was being set up, Jones sulked outside the penalty box, visibly upset he wasn’t taking the kick. Instead, Shkelzen Gashi took the penalty for the Rapids, but Frei pushed his attempt wide right to keep the deficient at one.

In addition to their star forward Dempsey being sidelined, the Sounders were also playing without forward Nelson Valdez. Midfielder and team assists leader Andreas Ivanschitz left the match in the 50th minute due to an apparent muscle injury. Shorthanded on the road, the Sounders couldn’t find the equalizer, missing on several build-up opportunities in the final quarter of the match.
Rapids striker Kevin Doyle effectively ended the game in the 86th minute with a goal off of a controversial volley that Sounders defender Brad Evans thought was off-sides. Evans couldn’t let it go and received a red card, his second ejection in his career with the Sounders.
