Washington Huskies Women’s Team Headed to 1st-Ever Final Four
By Ben Renner
Congratulations to the Washington Huskies Women’s basketball team for earning their first-ever trip to the Final Four.
Wow. After yet another stunning upset victory over the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, the Washington Huskies took an early lead against Stanford this morning and never looked back. The Huskies defeated mighty Maryland on Monday and stunned the Wildcats in Adolph Rupp Arena to face Stanford in the Elite 8, their first Elite 8 appearance since 2001.
The Washington Huskies came into the NCAA Women’s National Tournament as a 7-seed, and have now knocked off a 2-seed and a 3-seed. Their latest today was over 4th-seeded Stanford.
Kelsey Plum and Chantel Osahor once again carried the Washington Huskies, with 26 and 24 points, respectively. Osahor also grabbed 18 rebounds in the 85-76 win. The Huskies jumped all over the Cardinal early, leading 22-7 after the first quarter. Stanford had made the Final Four 12 times in its history and was looking to earn its seventh Final Four appearance in nine seasons.

Plum is the heart and soul of this year’s squad. She is the Washington Huskies all-time leading scorer and the sixth-highest scorer in Pac-12 history. She’s third in the nation this year in scoring with 26.2 ppg. However, it was Osahor who boosted the Huskies against Stanford. She shot 8-of-11 from the floor and stood up to Stanford star Erica McCall, who was last seen dropping 27 on Notre Dame in the last round.
This time, McCall was held scoreless in the first half, thanks mostly to Osahor, and her 17 points in the second half weren’t enough to withstand the Washington Huskies onslaught.
