Huskies Set Record in Triumph Over Colorado
By Ben Renner
The UW Huskies rushed out to an early lead against Colorado and held on to win 95-83 thanks to a team-record 15 blocked shots and an excellent close-out effort from Andrew Andrews.
The Huskies have had trouble closing games out so far this year. As the leaders of the Pac-12, Lorenzo Romar’s young pups have proven they can build leads but have yet to prove they can shut teams down during the final two minutes of games. They’ve managed to hold on to victories, thankfully, but if they want to play in March, they’ll have to keep opponents from sniffing a comeback. Their victory over the Colorado Buffaloes showed that this team can control late-game comebacks after all.
Andrew Andrews once again led the Huskies in scoring, pouring in 25 points in the second half after being held to only eight in the first half. Andrews put the final nail in Colorado’s coffin by making eight free throws in the last 90 seconds of the contest. The Pac-12’s leading scorer showed excellent composure from the line and, with a solid defensive effort from his teammates, shut down a Buffaloes comeback bid in the second half.
Andrews was supported by Marquese Chriss, who chipped in 17 points and Dejounte Murray, who also contributed 17. Malik Dime had a namesake-worthy 10 points and seven blocks, contributing to a new team record set by Washington for blocks in a game with 15.

After a Chriss dunk was waved off for occurring after the shot clock had expired with 2:27 left in the game, the Huskies led by 12. Colorado, led by Dominique Collier, scored five straight points to cut the lead to seven before Andrews repeatedly stepped to the line with ice in his veins.
Is it too early to get excited for this UW squad? I don’t think so. Although the Huskies are young, they are led by an extremely experienced coach in Romar and they have the athletic ability to run with anyone in the Pac-12. They’ll have their stumbles, but Romar has shown in the past that he can handle a young team and prepare them for March. Watch out for this team as the conference tightens up over the next few weeks and months.
The Huskies take on Utah in Seattle on Sunday.
