Seattle Seahawks Trade Up And Draft Tyler Lockett

This is my first draft as a Seattle Seahawks blogger, making me 50% on predicting what Pete Carroll and John Schneider will do. That’s it guys, I’m calling it a career. That’s the best percentage I could ever hope for.

But predicting this pick is not the only reason I’m excited. The other reason is Tyler Lockett is good. Like really, really good. Excuse me for a second….

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tyler Freakin’ Lockett!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lockett is Phillip Dorsett except he can actually run sharp routes. He has fantastic hands, and is both a smooth and explosive athlete. Here is what I wrote a few days ago in my seven-round predictions.

"The Seahawks got their feature pass-catcher in All-Pro Jimmy Graham. Now they get the X-factor.Tyler Lockett is the slight-framed, but explosive type. He has all types of speed. Lockett ran the fifth best 40-time, the third best 20-time and the best 60-time among all wide-outs at the combine. And not only does he have the speed, but he knows how to use it. Lockett runs sharp routes and creates tons of separation out of his breaks. This is a trait that no Seattle receiver does on a consistent basis (other than Graham’s constant separation due to his size). Here is Pro Football Spot’s Jon Ledyard on Lockett.“Lockett is simply the best route runner in the 2015 class, explosive and quick with his footwork, while constantly making defensive backs look silly in coverage. Some teams will be concerned about his inability to win at all levels of the field, but Lockett’s separation techniques and agility in the open field typically render his struggles with contested catches moot.”And with his athleticism and shiftiness, he would make for a dangerous return man, something the Seahawks are in desperate need of. Without the size or physicality, he could struggle against press-coverage, but that is about the only way to stop him. While Lockett is no guarantee due to lack of size, worst-case-scenario, we get a Tayvon Austin-type player.Best case scenario, we get the next Antonio Brown."

However, the Seahawks did give up some significant draft capital.

But I’m not worried about that right now. We’re already a really deep team, and only four or five of our 2015 draftees will make the roster anyway.

I’m excited guys. I’m really excited to see what Seattle’s passing game looks like next season with Jimmy Graham and Tyler Lockett added to the mix.
