The Seattle Sounders secured a much-needed win against the Houston Dynamo, after picking up just one point in their previous two games. However, there’s no denying it was a scrappy affair, not helped by the fact that the Sounders had to play most of the second half with 10 men, after Gonzalo Pineda‘s red card. (Fully deserved by the way.)
As such, it took a piece of magic from Obafemi Martins, to secure the 1-0 victory. Yes, Clint Dempsey played an important part with the through ball, but it was his teammate who did all the hard work, before finishing in style.
The goal marked the third strike of the season for the Nigerian forward, putting him level with Dempsey. The duo have accounted for all six of the Sounders goals so far this season. (Dear rest of the team: Please feel free to start joining in on the score sheet sometime soon.)
Unsurprisingly, Martins effort has landed him in the running for the week five edition of MLS’s AT&T Goal of the Week. The other contenders are Juan Agudelo (New England Revolution), Benoit Cheyrou (Toronto FC), Joevin Jones (Chicago Fire) and Javier Morales (Real Salt Lake).
Now, I could show some journalistic integrity here and tell you to examine all five goals before picking the best one. However, since you’re reading this article on a Seattle sports website, we can forget that course of action.
Instead, I implore you to vote for Martins. Just in case you need a bit of persuading, here’s a reminder of his nice spin move and cool finish:
Now, do the right thing and click here to vote for Martins to win the week five Goal of the Week award. Please note that voting runs until 11:59 pm PT on Thursday.
