2015 Seattle Mariners: Dare to Dream of a World Series?

Seattle sports fans are fiercely loyal, but many of them remain cautious about optimism, particularly when it comes to the Mariners. Certainly the Seattle Seahawks have injected a swagger into the Pacific Northwest that has never been seen before. When the ‘Hawks hoisted that Lombardi Trophy, fans across the region breathed a sigh of relief and prepared to celebrate a long sought-after championship.

The Seattle SuperSonics did win in 1979, but that is a few years ago now. The Washington Huskies were picked as national champions in 1992 (Don’t talk to me about splits. The Dawgs were the best in the nation). Add in the Seattle Storm and the Sounders and you have some decent hardware. Plus, don’t forget about the 1917 Seattle Metropolitans hockey team that brought home the Stanley Cup.

Seriously. Look it up.

Along the way we suffered through the disappointment of the 1994 Sonics and the gut-wrenching interception in last year’s Super Bowl. These painful memories are what shape us as fans, but we try not to dwell on those particular moments. We would rather celebrate the happier times, even if they are few and far between.

This brings us to the Seattle Mariners, a team that has come close but never won it all. We can wax poetic about 1995 and remember the awe-inspiring season of 2001, but both of those campaigns left us wanting.

Do we dare to believe that the mighty Mariners can put it together in 2015? Will this be the year where King Felix takes the mound in the World Series and pitches Seattle to victory, aided by the bats of Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz?

Admittedly, it is nice to go into the season with a level of optimism. Being a fan can be a frustrating endeavor, particularly when you start a year knowing that your team simply does not have a chance to win.

The Mariners have talent, and they have an opportunity to win. Will they? Wait and see. Could the city of Seattle actually have two championship-caliber teams at the same time? That’s just crazy talk, isn’t it? Should we dare to dream? Perhaps, but protect that heart. We have been down this road before.
