Will Ferrell To Play Second Base For Seattle Mariners

As an actor and funny man, Will Ferrell has made a household name of himself. As a powerful middle infielder with defensive chops, Robinson Cano has made a household name of himself. And, as of today, both will have logged time playing second base for the Seattle Mariners.

More from Emerald City Swagger

Today’s Mariner lineup has Willie Bloomquist playing second and batting eighth. But he’s expected to cede defensive responsibilities to Ferrell in what could be a sign of things to come. Perhaps Willie really is as vulnerable as he ought to be. Maybe Will Ferrell is a late entrant into the spring battle that should be. He sure would be an entertaining option, at least.

Although he didn’t make it into the Mariners’ starting lineup, Ferrell can take solace in the fact that he is indeed a starter today for the Oakland Athletics. That’s right: before Will Ferrell plays for the Mariners, he’s going to play against the Mariners. He’s batting fifth and starting at shortstop for the Athletics, highlighting their uncertainties up the middle.

What’s this all about, you ask? Will Ferrell is going to participate in five spring training games today, starting with this M’s/A’s tilt. He’ll play for each team in each game, and, by the end of the day, will have put in time at all ten positions. Yup, he’s gonna pitch. And catch. But as far as this game in concerned, he’ll be sticking to the middle infield.

It’s not all for fun, of course, as this is being done to raise money for cancer charities. He’s doing his best Bert Campaneris impression for charity. How cool is that? I just hope some team lets him bat. I want to see Will Ferrell try to hit a pitcher who doesn’t get what’s going on and is just throwing gas.

Will Ferrell will play second base for the Mariners today. Now to see if he cracks the opening day roster.
