Sounders FC Open Their Regular Season At Home Tonight

Sometimes an offseason can feel like it’s taking a lifetime. Other times they seemingly go by in the blink of an eye. That sure feels like the case for Sounders FC, who I swear were just yesterday playing the Los Angeles Galaxy for the right to advance to the MLS Cup. Turns out that was… three months ago? Okay, so it really hasn’t been that long. Phew.

More from Emerald City Swagger

Seattle has their regular season opener tonight, and with it comes the official end of the offseason. They’re starting their season at home, and if you’re in town it’s a game worth attending. The opponent is strong and it’s the first chance to fill CenturyLink Field since the NFL playoffs.

Tonight at 6:30pm the Seattle Sounders and New England Revolution will go head to head in the Emerald City, providing a matchup between the last two teams Los Angeles had to get through on their way to the Cup. After beating Seattle in the western conference finals, the Galaxy went on to beat New England in the Cup.

We all remember how this matchup went a year ago, of course – New England handed Sounders FC a brutal 5-0 beating. In a way, that defeat – coupled with the ending to last season – make this a rather ideal first match of the year. It’s a shot at redemption, against one of the only two teams that made it further than Seattle last year. A good opponent to have, let’s say.

The quest to defend the Supporters’ Shield is on. Sounders FC is back, and the season is just about ready to get going. Oh yeah, and don’t forget – March to the Match begins in Occidental Park at 5:00pm!
