Seattle Seahawks Injury Report: Richard Sherman Needs Tommy John Surgery

What’s worse than your team losing the Super Bowl despite an 88% chance of winning with 26 seconds left? Your team losing the Super Bowl despite an 88% chance of winning with 26 seconds left and a series of devastating injuries to key players! Let’s do a quick break down of who got banged up during the Big Game.

More from Emerald City Swagger

Jeremy Lane

Lane broke his wrist. If you only watched the play live then odds are you missed the sheer brutality of this injury, but later images showed Lane’s arm bending in a way that you never, ever want your arm to bend. It was pretty horrifying, and I’m definitely not going to link to the image. He’s going to have surgery, obviously, but isn’t expected to miss any time at the start of next season.

Richard Sherman

Sherman’s expected to be ready for training camp, too! Which is somewhat surprising, given that Pete Carroll just confirmed that Sherm’s going to need Tommy John surgery. Most common among pitchers, TJ involves fixing a damaged elbow ligament with another ligament from elsewhere in the body. It’s a major surgery, albeit one that modern medicine has more or less perfected.

Normally you hear “Tommy John” and think of a fourteen-month recovery timeline. But Sherman’s not a pitcher, and thus won’t have to wait as long to get back into action. While that shouldn’t detract from the severity of his tear, it is one hell of a silver lining.

Earl Thomas

Earl’s going to get a second opinion on his injured shoulder, but would appear likely headed to surgery. If he opts against surgery, it could be a long and delicate rehab process. Again, somehow, this injury isn’t expected to keep him out at the start of camp. Pro athletes are ridiculous.

Kam Chancellor

Chancellor’s knee was injured in Super Bowl practice, not that you’d ever guess that by watching him play yesterday.  All Carroll said was that Kam “might” need surgery, which is startling and disappointing. While Chancellor’s injury was the least visible of all the banged-up ‘Hawks, knees are as important as anything to good football mobility. Here’s hoping this doesn’t turn into anything worse.

So the Seahawks lost and most of the secondary needs surgery. The Legion of Emergency Room, am I right? Everyone keep your fingers crossed for speedy and uncomplicated recoveries.
