Seattle Seahawks Release TE Zach Miller After Four Seasons

According to a team release, the Seattle Seahawks have released starting tight end Zach Miller, along with DT Jesse Williams and OT Garrett Scott.

Miller struggled to find a niche in his time as a Seahawk. In his four years as an Oakland Raider, Miller totaled 226 receptions for 2,712 yards and 12 touchdowns and a Pro Bowl appearance.

In Seattle, Miller was about half as productive catching 102 passes for 1,092 yards and eight touchdowns. Although he did have a memorable performance in the 2013 NFC Divisional game against the Atlanta Falcons with eight receptions for 142 yards and a score.

Miller originally signed a five-year, $35 million contract with the Seahawks. However, before the 2014 season, the team renegotiated the final two years of the contract down to six million total. He was owed a $1 million bonus if he was still on the roster by March 19.

The move leaves Luke Willson and Cooper Helfet as the tight ends still on the team. Willson is owed $585,000 and Helfet $510,000, both significantly less than the $3 million owed to Zach Miller.

As I have stated before in previous articles, I love Tyler Kroft from Rutgers who could be available as late as the fourth round. Other than that, I don’t see many tight ends in the 2015 draft class capable of being much of a factor in the passing game early in their careers.

In free agency, some established veterans such as Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron, Jermaine Gresham, Niles Paul, Charles Clay and Owen Daniels. Any one of those players would be able to contribute for the Seahawks.

Williams and Scott’s are both due to unfortunate circumstances. Williams, similar to another former Seahawks DT Marcus Tubbs, couldn’t seem to go more than a week of training camp without tearing his ACL. Scott was a sixth round selection of the Seahawks in 2014, but a diagnosis of a rare heart condition prevented him from playing.
