Seattle Mariners: Top 50 players of all time
By Nick Lee
10. Alvin Davis (1984-1991)
“Mr. Mariner” himself cracks the top 10. Davis was drafted by the Mariners in the sixth round of the 1982 draft. He made his debut with the Mariners in 1984.
He earned his lone All-Star selection during his rookie year, playing in 152 games, hitting .284 with 27 home runs and 116 RBI on his way to winning the Rookie of the Year. He became the first Mariner to win the award.
Davis played eight solid seasons in Seattle. He hit 21 or more home runs in three separate seasons. He also hit above .300 once, batting .305 in 1989.
His best season came in 1987, when he played 157 games at first base. He swatted 29 home runs and had an even 100 RBI.
Davis added a nice .295 average as well, with a .370 on-base percentage. He also had a career-high 37 doubles that year.
He is in the top-10 in Mariners history in almost every major offensive category including WAR (8th), on-base percentage (5th), runs scored (6th), hits (5th), home runs (5th) and RBI (4th).
Needless to say Davis put his stamp on Mariners history. He became the first member of the Mariners Hall of Fame in 1997.
After the 1991 season, he signed a free-agent deal with the Angels. He played one year, and just 41 games before being released and calling it a career. He hit 160 home runs as a Mariner, along with 1,163 hits and was a career .280 hitter.
