Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais advises Jean Segura should be back for the Oakland Athletics series, after completing a rehab assignment.

The Seattle Mariners have been on a good run of late, recovering from a 1-6 start to win five of their last eight games. Now, they’re set to receive another boost, in respect of Jean Segura.

After doing some supervised running to test his right hamstring, Segura has been cleared to return to action. He will now head out for a minor league rehab assignment for at least two games.

The thinking is to give the 27-year old some game at-bats, before activating him from the disabled list. He is eligible to return on Friday, April 21.

Mariners’ manager Scott Servais provided an update to Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times and other members of the media, ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Miami Marlins:

"“He had a good workout today,” Servais said. “He got out and ran and feels good about where he’s at. We are going to get him out and get him a game or two. But we are still looking for him to come back in the Oakland series. I don’t know the exact date yet.”"

Segura took part in the Mariners’ usual pregame workout ahead of the 5-0 loss to the Marlins, which included taking ground balls and batting practice. While his hamstring is still not at 100 percent, Servais said it’s very close.

The Dominican Republic native originally injured himself in a 6-0 win against the Houston Astros. He felt his hamstring tighten early in the game and was unable to loosen it up again.

More from Seattle Mariners

The injury was unfortunate given the early success Segura had enjoyed, after arriving in Seattle via a trade during the offseason. In particular, he had already produced four multi-hit games during his first seven appearances.

Ironically, the absence of the 2013 All-Star has not been an impactful as feared, due to his replacement, Taylor Motter. The long-haired fan favorite has been in fine form, providing a spark for the team with three home runs, six RBIs and three multi-hit games in his seven full appearances since taking over from Segura.

Regardless, you would assume Segura will return to his position at shortstop, once he is back on the roster. He is expected to be a significant part of the Mariners’ postseason challenge, after batting .319, hitting 102 RBIs and stealing 33 bases last year for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

However, Servais will likely now look for other ways to find more at-bats for Motter, given his recent hot streak. One possibility could include playing him at first base, which is currently occupied by the struggling Danny Valencia.
