Pick 148: Seahawks select Shaquill Griffin, DB UCF

One of the best stories in College Football in 2017, Shaquill Griffin‘s tale is well documented. He turned down an opportunity to play for his beloved Miami Hurricanes because of a promise he made to his twin brother when they were younger. Shaquem Griffin lost his hand at age four and his brother vowed not to go to a school that wouldn’t offer both a scholarship.

The sheer emotion of their story is enough to make any NFL fan want to add Griffin to their defensive backfield. But perhaps no head coach loves these types of stories more than Carroll.

On the field, Griffin posses elite athleticism. Zach Whitman of 3sigmaathlete.com gives him a SPARQ score of 134.1, ranking as the third highest among DB’s. He also checks the boxes on size, standing 6’0″ and 195 lbs, and length (32 3/4 inch arms).

Griffin ran a 4.38 40 yard dash, with a 38.5 inch vertical jump and a 132 inch broad jump. Once he puts the pads on, Ghe runs through receivers to separate the ball from the intended receiver. He has above-average ball skills, but struggles to diagnose route concepts.

These traits lead me to wonder if Griffin can play free safety, but should be a valuable asset on special teams as he learns the position.
