By Ben Renner
2. Detlef Schrempf
The 6’10” forward from Leverkusen, Germany played 16 seasons in the NBA, including a productive stint with the Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp-led Sonics from 1993 to 1999. Schrempf was a member of the famous 1996 squad that fought so valiantly against Michael Jordan’s Bulls in the NBA Finals. In all, Schrempf played 1136 games in the NBA and appeared in 114 playoff games. He and Dirk Nowitzki are the only two German-born players to appear in the NBA Finals. During the 1994-1995 season with the Sonics, Schrempf came in second in the NBA in three-point shooting percentage, making 51.4 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. He was a three-time NBA All-Star in his career.
Schrempf moved from Germany with his family to Centralia, Washington his senior year in high school. After leading the Centralia High School Tigers to an AA state championship, he joined the UW Huskies under Marv Harshman in 1981. He played all four years with the UW Huskies, helping them take Pac-10 regular season titles in 1984 and 1985. He helped the UW Huskies make the Sweet 16 in 1984. During his Washington career, he was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection in both 1984 and 1985.
You can still catch Schrempf towering over people on the streets of downtown Seattle. He’s a Business Development Officer at Coldstream Capital. That’s what a degree in International Business will do for you, folks.
