2) Play your usual game

If you were to utter these words last year, it would have induced a heavy dose of anxiety among the majority of Sounders’ fans. No matter how much Sigi Schmid achieved in Seattle during his reign — and it was a lot — he had a frustrating tendency to sit back and play it cautious when leading.

As such, it must be refreshing to know HEAD COACH Schmetzer told the media on Tuesday: “We’re going to try to win the game. We’ve said that over and over. … We’re not going to sit back and defend for 90 minutes.”

However, don’t mistake this for thinking Sounders will go hell for leather in attack. It just means they won’t park the bus in front of their own goal and invite FC Dallas to take shooting practice.

Another advantage to the Sounders’ approach is that if they can grab even one away goal, it then means the hosts have to score five times to beat them. Just writing that, makes you realize what a great position they are in right now.
