The Seahawks earned their first divisional win this season with a 37-18 route of the San Francisco 49ers. Quarterback Russell Wilson mildly sprained his MCL but is reported to be able to play next week.

The Seahawks needed a dominating win at home against the San Francisco 49ers this week after scoring only 15 points in their first two games. Against both Miami and Los Angeles, the Seahawks’ offensive line struggled to create running lanes and simply couldn’t protect Russell Wilson when he dropped back to pass.

Contributing to their offensive concerns coming into yesterday’s game at the Clink was Wilson’s injured ankle. He rolled it against the Dolphins and looked tender when trying to escape pressure and deliver accurate passes against the Rams, leading to an embarrassing 9-3 loss in Week 2.

A ‘Phew’ Moment

The ankle looked much better against San Francisco, but in the middle of the third quarter, Wilson was horse-collared on a sack and twisted his knee. He was in obvious pain and had to leave the game to allow backup Trevone Boykin his first regular season NFL action.

For some reason, head coach Pete Carroll let Wilson go back after one play, despite the Seahawks leading 24-3 at the time. Wilson engineered a field goal drive before ceding quarterback duties to Boykin. If it were me, there’s no way my franchise quarterback sees the field after getting injured in a blowout, but Wilson seemed to have escaped without serious injury and should be fine for Week 4 against the New York Jets.

Seahawks Going Back to Basics

The Seahawks have always been a run-first team under offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Pete Carroll. With Thomas Rawls missing yesterday due to a shin injury, the Seahawks gave Christine Michael a shot as the starting running back and he didn’t miss. The Seahawks scored on their third play from scrimmage–a 41-yard jaunt from Michael–his first career touchdown.

Michael finished with 106 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. The offensive line opened holes for him, which Michael used to repeatedly gash the 9ers. It was a good sign that at least the o-line can still run-block. Wilson also had time to throw on occasion against San Francisco, finding receiver Doug Baldwin eight times for 164 yards and a score, and, perhaps more terrifying for the rest of the NFL, finding rejuvenated tight end Jimmy Graham for six catches, 100 yards, and another score.

Next Game

The Seahawks travel to New Jersey to take on the New York Jets in one of those early, East Coast games the Hawks are traditionally bad at.
