The Mariners lost two of three to the Red Sox in Fenway this weekend to fall to 8.5 games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West standings.
The series got off to a good start for Scott Servais’ club as they won the first game 8-4 behind a strong outing on the mound by Hisashi Iwakuma. He went 7 innings giving up 4 runs and won behind an impressive offensive display from Franklin Gutierrez who hit 2 home runs and drove in 6 runs.
Game two saw Adrian Sampson make his MLB debut on the mound for the Mariners, throwing 4 ⅔ innings in the start, but he was outmatched by 6 strong innings from Boston’s Rick Porcello, as well as home runs by Jackie Bradley Jr. and Xander Bogaerts. The Mariners didn’t get much offense aside from an Adam Lind solo shot in the second and a 3 for 3 performance from Seth Smith.
In the rubber match, David Price proved to be too much for the Mariners’ bats as they lost the game, and the series, 2-1 in Boston’s favor. Price threw 8 strong innings, striking out 7 and giving up only 1 run, a solo home run by Franklin Gutierrez. Taijuan Walker threw 5 innings of shutout baseball but was unable to go out for a 6th inning as the foot injury he suffered in his last start against Tampa Bay flared up again. Mookie Betts hit a go-ahead solo home run off of Edwin Diaz which ultimately decided the game.

Looking forward, the Mariners travel to Detroit to face off against the Tigers in a four-game series. They still have not won a series since they played the Padres at home last month and will hope to change that with an impressive showing in Comerica Park.
