Coming into this weekend series against Los Angeles, the Mariners looked poised to cement their place on top of the American League West. The Angels were off to a slow start to the season and the Mariners hadn’t lost a series in over a month.
However, with a 3-0 win last night, the Angels swept the first-place Mariners at Safeco Field, shocking huge crowds in all three games and coming from behind in the first two games.
The Angels came to Seattle having lost six games in a row. On Friday night, longtime Mariners villain Mike Scioscia found his team trailing 5-1 late in the game, but the Angels scored six runs off of the Mariners’ normally solid bullpen in the final three innings to overcome heroics by shortstop Ketel Marte and designated hitter Nelson Cruz to win game one 7-6. Angels first baseman C.J. Cron hit a home run in the eighth inning and blooped a bases loaded single in the top of the ninth against Mariners closer Steve Cishek for the go-ahead runs.
Cishek continued his meltdown into the second game of the series, in which he allowed a three-run blast by Angels designated hitter Albert Pujols in the ninth inning to erase a five-run eighth inning for the Mariners. The Angels hit three home runs in the seventh inning, scoring five runs of their own, but the Mariners roared back in the eighth, tying the game on a double from the recently resurgent first baseman Adam Lind, who went 2-for-4 with a home run on the night. Third baseman Kyle Seager 3-for-4 for the game to continue his hot hitting.
The third game was a typical Felix start. The King went 7.1 innings, struck out nine, scattered seven hits, allowed three runs… and took the loss. Angels starter Hector Santiago was brilliant for Los Angeles, tossing eight shutout innings and allowing only two hits. Hernandez had allowed two base runners in the eighth before he was pulled and reliever Nick Vincent allowed them both to score.
