First Place!

Over a month into the season and the Mariners sit atop first place in the AL West, not a small accomplishment for Servais’ crew. Hopefully they will continue to win most of their close games and get better at stealing bases as the season goes on.

If the Mariners can keep their offensive effectiveness up and get baserunners to not run into outs, they have plenty of power to bring them across the plate. The Mariners are first in the American League with 43 home runs, 12 by the resurgent Cano. They’re third in the league in runs scored. They’ll get even better if they can either figure out how to steal bases or only let Martin steal from now on.

Meanwhile, the pitching has kept enough games close to give them a chance to win most of them, a trend that they will need to maintain as the season progresses.
