Series Recap: Royals @ Mariners
By James Loss
The Mariners continue their hot streak as they win 2 out of 3 against the Royals, picking up another series win.
Game 1
Felix Hernandez claimed his spot in Mariners history as he tied Jamie Moyer for most franchise wins. Hernandez pitched a 7 ⅔ inning shutout, earning his 145th victory and matching Moyer’s record. Although, Seattle barely escaped with the win scoring only one run off one hit. Seth Smith sent his 100th career home run over the wall in the 6th inning that would win the game. Steve Cishek picked up his 6th save of the season to close the game, but not without the help of a web gem from Leonys Martin. Martin’s wall rattling catch ended the game putting Seattle up 1-0 in the series.

Game 2
Wade Miley was in complete command of his pitching, as he threw a complete game with no walks and four strikeouts. Miley improved his record to 2-2 and allowed 5 hits and no runs scored. Kyle Seager led the Mariners to a 6-0 victory with a 3-run home run in the first. Seth Smith also recorded a first inning home run. It was a solo homer similar to his one from the previous night and his fourth of the season. Kansas City’s Yordano Ventura would receive the loss.
Game 3
Unfortunately, the Seattle Mariners could not complete a sweep of the defending League Champions. The Royals were able to snap their 5-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Seattle. Ian Kennedy pitched five shutout innings and then ran into a jam in the 6th. Kennedy was pulled in the 6th after loading the bases, but the Mariners would bring in only one run off of reliever Danny Duffy. Taijuan Walker earned his first loss of the season in his shortest outing of the season, where he allowed a season-high 3 runs on 7 hits. Chris Iannetta accounted for the team’s only RBI.
Postscript
Luckily for the Seattle Mariners, the Rangers lost to Anaheim last night as well, keeping the gap between the two teams at half of a game. Seattle recorded their 5th straight series win and extended their streak. Next up is a trip to Oakland, which is a good opportunity to separate themselves from the division by a couple games. Nathan Karns takes on the A’s tonight in the divisional matchup and hopes to earn the Seattle Mariners another victory.
