Mariners Tie Angels After Bizarre Play
By Ben Renner
The Mariners tied the Los Angeles Angels 4-4 in Arizona on another good day from Stefen Romero and a strange play.
The Mariners tied the LA Angels yesterday at Tempe Diablo Stadium, with Stefen Romero keeping his hot hitting alive with a 3 for 4 day, boosting his Cactus League batting average up to .480. Romero is making a strong case to take the fourth outfield spot behind Leonys Martin, Nori Aoki, and Seth Smith. Cody Martin started for Seattle, replacing scheduled starter Wade Miley, who pitched with the minor league squad to avoid playing the Angels twice in two days. Martin gave up two runs on six hits in three innings.

Former Angels outfielder Dave Robertson continued his hot hitting for the Mariners, blasting a two-run double in the fourth inning. First baseman Dae-Ho Lee knocked in a run with a single in the first. Lee figures to be a strong candidate to be Adam Lind‘s platoon mate at first base.
The strange play came in the fifth inning, when Angels outfielder Daniel Nava caught a fly ball by Kyle Seager and tossed the ball into the stands with only two outs in the inning. Romero, who was on first base, was awarded an extra base for Nava’s miscue but didn’t tag up to advance to second base, and was called out by the umpire crew. The play may have been missed if not for Angels manager Mike Scioscia kindly pointing the rule infraction out to the umps. Scioscia is a stickler for these things, guys. The man will challenge a play in Spring Training and bunt for a base hit when your pitcher is going for a no-hitter. He’s a good villain.
