The Cougars lost again, this time to Oregon State 69-49 in Corvallis. They remain stuck at one win in conference play heading into their road date with Washington.

The WSU Cougars are almost done playing basketball this year. The conclusion of their lost season under Ernie Kent can’t come fast enough for most fans (and sportswriters). Last night, they lost by 20 points for their 16th conference loss this season and their 15th consecutive loss.

More from Washington State Cougars

For the WSU Cougars, Josh Hawkinson scored 14 points and collected nine rebounds and Charles Callison added 13. The night belonged to Gary Payton II, however. Payton, a senior on Senior Night in Corvallis, wore his father’s OSU number 20 on the court instead of his normal. He also threw down a huge dunk (during which he looked nothing like his father) to cap an 18-2 run to start the game. Gary Payton himself applauded from his seat.

Payton finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists for the Beavers. He leads the team incredibly in points, assists, rebounds, and steals. Even the first Gary Payton didn’t do that for a full season. Drew Eubanks added 13 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks while Tres Tinkle contributed 13 points for the Beavers.

The WSU Cougars face the Washington Huskies for their final game of the regular season at Hec Ed Pavilion on Wednesday. They will play at least one game in the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas starting on March 9th. After that, we won’t have to watch this team anymore. Coach Ernie Kent has the experience and the recruiting skills to turn this program around if given the chance, it just didn’t happen this year. If Que Johnson and Josh Hawkinson, who leads the Pac-12 in double-doubles, return to the team next year, they’ll have a chance to build a winner quickly.

If the WSU Cougars can’t get some help, though…It will be another long season.
