The Seahawks could be in the need for another starter at cornerback opposite Richard Sherman. Could Janoris Jenkins be the answer?

Most expected Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins to move with the team to Los Angeles. The Rams cut several players from their roster, including James Laurinaitis, Jared Cook, and Chris Long recently, supposedly to free up even more cap space than they already have, which is considerable. Both of their starting corners are up for free agency and they’re expected to use the franchise tag on Trumaine Johnson, not Jenkins.

Jenkins was in talks with the Rams until today, when he reportedly fired his agent. The Rams offered him a five-year, $45 million deal, which Jenkins rejected. $45 million is a large contract for the Seahawks to pay for a free agent cornerback. After the disaster that was Cary Williams last season, it’s hard to get excited about an expensive veteran cornerback, especially at Pete Carroll’s School of Man Coverage, where fifth- and sixth-round picks go to become cheap, team-controlled Pro Bowlers.

Still, Jenkins is still only 26 and was ranked as the 26th cornerback in the NFL by Pro Football Focus of 111 qualifying players last season. Jeremy Lane could be on the outs and if the Seahawks don’t strike gold in this year’s draft, they’ll need a starter across from Richard Sherman. Jenkins’ price is a little high, considering he fired his agent for negotiating an unacceptable $45 million contract with the Rams, but if John Schneider and company can lure a former division rival up I-5, opposing teams won’t be able to target weak links in the secondary anymore.

Jenkins reportedly plans to hire Darrelle Revis‘ agent, who has hooked his client up with massive contracts in the past. It seems evermore likely that the Rams won’t be able to afford him. Their loss will be another team’s gain. It could be the Seahawks.
