The champs of the east versus the runners-up of the west. Two of the best, if not the two best teams in the league. Perpetual runners-up versus the team hungriest of all just to make it there. This matchup had it all, and in the end, it was the guys in green that went home happy.

Playing in their first official match of the season, Sounders FC dominated the New England Revolution to the tune of a 3-0 beatdown. The 39,782 fans in attendance were treated to quite the showing, and Seattle exorcised the demons of a brutal 5-0 loss suffered the last time these two teams met.

Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins, the team’s superstar forwards, led the charge for much of the game and were responsible for all three of the game’s goals. Watching the energy between the two was downright tantalizing, and has the whole city of Seattle wondering just how far this team can go.

In the 25th minute Dempsey laced a penalty kick into the top of the net to give Seattle a lead. Martins played add-on in the 41st, taking a cross from Tyrone Mears and sending it to goal. With a 2-0 lead in hand, things were starting to feel pretty good for the Sounders.

It wasn’t until the third goal that it became evident that this Sounders team can probably do whatever it wants to whoever it wants. The third goal was a thing of beauty, as Dempsey and Martins simply made themselves at home deep in New England territory, scoring an effortless goal after getting themselves into a two-on-one situation with Revolution goaltender Bobby Shuttleworth. Seattle starts their season 1-0 with three points in the bag. They looked excellent against a very good opponent, never really letting the Revolution get comfortable enough to get going. This might be the best Sounders FC team ever. If that ends up being the case, they sure didn’t waste any time in letting us know.
