Free Flowing Free Safety Earl Thomas Puts Out Killer Tweet
By Marc Singer
This is the 40-Something Files! (Special Mid-Week Quickie)
A weekly take on the state of Seattle Sports through the lens of a guy whose four decades of fandom has earned too many scars, and seen too few celebrations.
So, I was caught in a Twitter time suck earlier, while also listening to KJR AM Sports Radio on the I Heart Radio App, and also walking the dog in the pitch black night, when I heard the screeching of brakes… not the kind made by a car on the road, but rather, the kind made in your head when something alarming comes across your feed.
I dropped the leash (dog now looking up at me head cocked) and frantically began searching my mind for some context to what I just saw. The halting tweet from the Seattle Seahawks’ very own fireball of a free safety, Earl Thomas III read:
Whuuuuuh? Why would he say this now?!?

My head was now cocked, looking down at the dog, looking back up, head cocked, at me!
Could Thomas III already have an issue with his newly promoted D coordinator, Kris Richard?
But then, as I reached down for the dog’s leash, somewhat regaining a responsible dog walker’s focus, I also recalled the general attitude of the source. Earl Thomas may be lightning fast, reactionary, and violent on the field of play, but this is the off-season. ET3 is probably as Zen and thoughtful as anyone can be.
Thinking back to a time before I entered into the evening’s Twitter time-suck state, I remembered a photo I came across earlier in the day (somewhere on the net) featuring Thomas III standing in a locker room, attired in uniform sans shoulder-pads, standing in lock step pose with the one and only Marshawn Lynch. If it was after the Superbowl, you’d be hard pressed to notice. You could tell they were happy just to be with family.
So, I wonder, and you and the rest of the 12s may be one step ahead of me already, or if you saw the tweet I am speaking of, may have known all along. But could that have been Earl’s way of throwing a little “under the table” love Beastmode’s way?
It’s no secret that the big concern in the Seahawks’ camp is “will he or won’t he” retire. In fact, Seahawks’ GM, John Schneider, Thursday at the NFL combine, answered questions from the national media about that very subject. It’s also no secret that Lynch and Seahawks’ OC, Darrell Bevel (AKA: The “boss” of the offense) don’t always seem to be on the same page.
So when ET3 tweets cryptically, via a not-so-private medium, “Don’t let your boss kill your dreams,” perhaps he is simply sending his brother from the other side of the locker room, seven empowering words. Words that actually mean: “Come back to your family, and don’t let your frustration with management keep you from getting what’s yours for the taking: Another year or two doing what you love, and a one way ticket to the Hall of Fame.”
We may never know for sure, but the 12s out there better hope I’m on to something here. The last thing any of us want to find out is that Earl Thomas III’s new boss is killing anyone’s dreams, other than those of opposing QB’s.
