Jesus Montero

Down to his target weight and well past his days as a lumbering catcher, there’s already reason for optimism surrounding the once-hyped prospect. He’s made his way to a more natural defensive position and is finally taking his conditioning seriously. There’s even a semi-obvious spot for him on the active roster.

As a Mariner, Montero has never posted an OBP over .300. But he’s at .302 for his career as a major leaguer, thanks to his ridiculous 69 plate appearances as a Yankee callup in September 2011. Over that stretch he hit .328/.409/.590, and we were supposedly getting a glimpse at the stud prospect hitting like he was supposed to.

Montero’s not going to post a four-digit OPS this season. But if he’s really found himself physically and mentally, then why not think he’s at least a better hitter than Logan Morrison? Montero could end the season as Seattle’s starting first baseman. He could go on a tear and rediscover his home run swing. Looking for the best bet for Seattle to get absolutely killer production out of first base? A Montero breakout is at or near the top of the list.
