Without Chris Young, the 2014 Seattle Mariners probably don’t make a playoff push. If the team had stuck with Randy Wolf, there probably would have been no chance they’d get as close to the postseason as they did. They thought they were simply finding a fifth starter, but nope, turned out they actually grabbed a rotation cog.

Young came out of nowhere last season to provide an unexpected boost to the Mariners, but that’s not the only kind of guy who can help a team. One of the reasons the Mariners are such a sexy pick to win the AL West this year is because they’re full of former top prospects who’s careers have hit something of a snag. Those guys are closer to their physical prime and their high water prospect status than any Chris Young. Those guys are all breakouts waiting to happen.

As we’ve seen over the past five-some years, there’s no guarantee that any of these guys will break out. Mariners fans should know that better than anybody. So consider this a reminder that they don’t all have to be Justin Smoak.
