Seattle Mariners Rumors: Winter Meetings Day Two Recap
By Ben Reese
Seattle Mariners News and Rumors:
The Mariners have said that the talks with Melky Cabrera have stalled. The Mets are discussing trading a veteran starter and the M’s could be a possible fit as the Mets need a shortstop. The Dodgers and Padres are serious about OF Matt Kemp, and the Mariners could potentially be out on him. The Mariners are said to be considering a trade for Dayan Viciedo.
Elsewhere around the league:
SP Francisco Liriano signs with the Pirates for three years, $39 million.
Liriano has pitched for the Pirates the last two years and put up a 3.38 ERA last season. Although he went 7-10, he had a career year in 2013, going 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA. This is a solid move, as Liriano wasn’t expected to sign until after Jon Lester but the Bucs swung in and snatched him up.
Diamondbacks trade Miguel Montero to the Cubs for Jeferson Mejia and Zack Godley.
Montero, 31, hit .243 last season with the D-backs. The Cubs made offense a top priority this offseason and got some in Montero, who hit thirteen homers and drove in 72 RBIs last year. This is a good move for both sides as the D-backs are trying to rebuild and the Cubs want offense.
Cubs sign Jon Lester for six years, $155 million
After weeks of rumors and speculation, the decision has finally come. Lester chose the Cubs giving them a brand new ace in their pitching staff. Lester pitched for Boston and Oakland last year, putting up a 2.46 ERA. With him, the Cuba have much better odds at a WS title. This is a great move for the Cubbies!
