Seattle Mariners Offseason Prediction – If The M’s Had The Dodgers Budget
Seattle Mariners Offseason Prediction: Andrew Miller (4 years, $30 million)
The Mariners relief pitching was the best in baseball in 2014 with a 2.59 ERA. But the only left handed relievers currently on the roster are Charlie Furbush (3.61) and Lucas Luetge (5.00), who rank last and second-to-last on the team in ERA out of the bullpen.
Miller’s ERA has gone down every year since 2010, culminating with a ridiculous 2014 season: 2.02 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 14.9 K/9. Only Aroldis Chapman had a better strikeout-per-nine-innings ratio.
Bringing back Joe Beimel would also be beneficial to the club. Although they were fantastic as a whole, last year’s ratio of 7 right-handed relievers to only 3 lefties wasn’t ideal. Also, the emergence of Carson Smith, who went 8.1 IP with zero runs allowed and only two hits, makes one of the other righties expendable.
