Bullpen
Great starters are certainly helpful, but you need a good bullpen so that the lead can be protected. This season, the Mariners have that bullpen.
Fernando Rodney has been great, and the middle relievers have been holding leads all season. From Joe Beimel and his 1.19 ERA to Rodney’s 36 saves, the M’s have just been tough in the later innings.
If the offense can score a few runs early, the Mariners know that they are in good shape. There is no need to trade for a Healthcliff Slocumb this season. The bullpen is loaded.
