The Seattle Seahawks and the rest of the NFL are still waiting on Jared Allen. He was supposed to make a decision this weekend. Apparently he needs more time.
In a recent interview, coach Pete Carroll was quoted as saying:
"“It’s a big business decision for him. There’s really not much to comment about it right now. We’re very restricted in what we can do. We have a lot of work to get done here on our roster, a lot of guys we’ve got to work with. We’re excited about extending and stuff like that. So we have a lot of concerns and can’t move as swiftly as everyone would like.”"
This feels more and more like it is about the money. Notice how Carroll said “business” decision?
There is also the reality that chasing a Super Bowl is a very difficult venture. The Seahawks and their fans have every reason to be confident going into next season, and the ‘Hawks could end up in the Super Bowl again.
However, the road will not be easy and repeating in the NFL is extremely difficult. Injuries, momentum shifts and freak plays can derail an entire season of success and send a team home while the opponent moves on.
Jared Allen has been around long enough to know this. He can join the Seahawks and chase a ring, but nothing guaranteed. If he signs for less money, he could find himself in the exact same position next year. Namely, a year older and still without a ring.
The Seahawks will need to move on soon. Time for a decision.
