The Washington Huskies have reportedly signed Mike Hopkins to a six-year deal, to take over as their new head coach.

Well, that didn’t take long. Just four days after firing Lorenzo Romar, the Washington Huskies have a new head coach.

As reported by ESPN’s Jeff Goodman and Jeff Borzello, Mike Hopkins will take over as the 12th coach in the program’s history. The deal will apparently be for six years.

In some respects, the quick move to hire Hopkins is almost as surprising as the original decision to fire Romar. As such, it’s possible this sequence of events had been in the works for some time.

Regardless, there is a lot of intrigue surrounding the Laguna Hills, California native, who has always been renowned for bringing an impressive work ethic to the court, both as a player and a coach. obviously, the front office will be hoping this continues with the Huskies, especially with them coming off a disastrous season.

Hopkins has been involved in coaching with Syracuse, since being recruited as an assistant in 1996. He was always expected to take over from Jim Boeheim, whenever the four-time Big East Coach of the Year eventually decided to retire.

Hopkins went 4-5 as interim head coach during the 2015-16 season, while Boeheim was suspended. A source close to the situation, discussed the 47-year old’s reasons for accepting the position in Seattle, with Goodman:

"“He wants to build a legacy, felt like the opportunity was special at Washington, and also wanted to make sure he did right by his mentor and father figure, Jim Boeheim.”"

It is an understatement to say Hopkins will have his work cut out with the Huskies. Speculation is already rife that the roster will be gutted after the decision to fire Romar, led by Michael Bradley Jr., widely regarded as the top high school prospect in the country.
