Just days before National Signing Day, Sumner High School running back Connor Wedington commits to Washington Pac-12 rival Stanford.

Sumner’s Connor Wedington announced in a video posted on Twitter his collegiate intentions just a few days ahead of National Signing Day:

I will give him points for snowboarding skill (of which I have none) and for creativity. However, Washington Huskies fans have to be disappointed that he wriggled out of a commitment he made to Doug Petersen last school year, then followed that up with a gut-punch to join the Trees.

Petersen had the talented Sumner High School running back committed to Washington as of Wedington’s junior year. But, young minds are fickle.

Wedington’s flip-flop will hurt the Washington Huskies. Wedington is considered to be one of the best high school recruits in the state. Despite missing Sumner’s run to the Class 4A state semifinals due to a separated shoulder, he piled up 2,048 all-purpose yards and 19 rushing touchdowns.

Wedington is considered one of the five blue-chip recruits to come out of Washington high schools this year. Of those, three are committed to don the Purple and Gold. As National Signing Day (Feburary 1st) approaches, more defections, both good and bad, could happen. Coach Petersen has so far done an excellent job bringing in talent, as seen by his team’s College Football Playoff run this season. Keeping talent in-state is a great way for the Washington Huskies to remain competitive in the Pac-12 for years to come.

The Huskies appear primed for another run at the CFP next year. Losing Wedington and seeing him sign with Stanford hurts, but with another year of Jake Browning and several key defensive players coming up, Washington will still contend in the Pac-12 next year.
