The Mariners lost yesterday 4-3 against the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium. Hisashi Iwakuma threw a wild pitch to allow Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner to score the go-ahead run in the fifth inning from third. He allowed four runs, three earned, in seven innings. Alex Rodriguez snapped an 0-19 skid with a two-run home run off of Iwakuma in the second inning.

Kuma faced his old team mate Masahiro Tanaka yesterday. The two were teammates on the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles for four years in the Nippon Professional Baseball League. Tanaka allowed three runs in seven innings for the Yankees, allowing another former Japanese league star, outfielder Nori Aoki, a triple in the fifth inning.

More from Seattle Mariners

After the seventh inning with the Yankees leading 4-3, it was all over. Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller both struck out the side in the eighth and ninth innings to slam the door on the Mariners.

The Mariners held on for a tough win the day before, 3-2 in New York. Felix Hernandez walked a career-high six in his start, but his four strikeouts tied him with Randy Johnson as the career leader in strikeouts in Mariners franchise history. Steve Cishek nailed down Hernandez’s first win of the year with his first save of the year: a shaky outing in which Cishek allowed two batters to reach base.

The Mariners dominated the Yankees in game one, winning 7-1 behind a solid start from Nathan Karns, who only allowed one run on a home run to Gardner in the first inning. Catcher Chris Iannetta continued his hot start to the season, going 3 for 3 with a two-run home run. Robinson Cano also homered in his annual return to Yankee Stadium.
