Mariners drop three in a row as the A’s sweep Seattle in home opening series. They scored only four runs in three games after battering the Rangers.

The Mariners took to Safeco Field for the first time this season in the home opening series versus the Oakland A’s. Taijuan Walker and Nathan Karns made their 2016 debuts and the King’s Court came to session for the first time this year.

Although sadly, Seattle failed to give the home crowd a victory.

Game 1

Korean slugger Dae-Ho Lee recorded his first MLB hit with a home run in the fifth inning putting the Mariners on the board at 2-1. Ketel Marte would later hit a sac fly in the same inning, scoring Leonys Martin and tying the game at 2-2. The game would remained tied until Seattle closer, Steve Cishek, took the mound and gave up a solo home run to Chris Coghlan. Seattle would fail to answer with a run in the bottom half. Taijuan Walker was given the no-decision after allowing two earned runs on the day.

Game 2

Nathan Karns had himself a rough first outing of the year, getting pulled in the fifth inning with four earned runs including Josh Reddick’s two-run home run. Seattle had a homer of it’s own as Chris Iannetta went yard for the first time this season. His solo shot would be Seattle’s only run in a 6-1 loss. Oakland’s Rich Hill earned his first win of the season.

Game 3

King Felix took the mound in his home opener this season. Hernandez was nothing less than dominant, but once again received no run support and found himself with another no decision. The King’s Court amped the stadium full of energy as Felix went 7 scoreless innings and handed out 10 strikeouts. Unfortunately for the King, Nick Vincent would allow a late home run to the A’s Marcus Seimen that tied the game 1-1. Forced into extra innings, the Mariners found themselves down by one after another Oakland home run courtesy of Coco Crisp. Seattle would again fail to answer with a score in the bottom half of the inning, completing Oaklands sweep.

Postscript

Poor offensive production was the downfall of this series. Any pitcher, no matter how good, will be hard-pressed for a win when their hitters can’t provide more than 2 runs. The Mariners will try to snap the losing streak as they host the Rangers for a 3 game series series starting tonight at seven.
