The Mariners face the Oakland A’s tonight at 7pm for their Home Opener. Get the skinny below.

The Mariners open their 2016 home schedule with a date with the division-rival A’s. Taijuan Walker has the honor of taking the mound for the Home Opener, squaring off against Oakland starter Eric Surkamp.

The Mariners started their season hot after dropping a bizarre Opening Day game and hanging Felix Hernandez with his first-ever Opening Day loss. They pounded Rangers pitching the next two games of their opening series in Arlington, scoring 19 runs. Robinson Cano hit four home runs in the series, turning in the fastest three-game start to a season in his career.

Ken Griffey Jr., fresh off his near-unanimous election to the Hall of Fame, will throw out the first pitch in what will undoubtedly be an emotional pregame celebration. For the second consecutive season, Walker will make his debut against Oakland. He had an ugly debut in 2015, surrendering nine runs on nine hits and never reaching the fourth inning.

“I definitely want to go out there and have a good outing against them, because last year they got me pretty well. I guess a little payback this time,” Walker said.

Surkamp will make his first start since 2013, when he pitched for the San Francisco Giants. He pitched in one game last season, giving up four runs in 3 1/3 innings for the LA Dodgers. He’ll have his work cut out for him against a Mariners team that hit nine home runs in Texas.

Scott Servais will manage his first game from the home team dugout. He has already won fans and players over with his scuffle with Rangers manager Jeff Bannister after a tense moment in which former Mariner Tom Wilhelmsen hit catcher Chris Iannetta with a pitch late in the Mariners’ 10-2 win on Tuesday.

“I know the city is excited, a lot of change, a lot of good vibe around our organization,” Servais said. “Rightly so, and I think they’re going to like watching us play.”
