Pete Carroll is close to signing a contract extension with the Seahawks, according to ESPN’s Ian Rappaport.

Ian Rappaport of ESPN tweeted this afternoon that Pete Carroll and the Seahawks are close to agreeing to a contract extension. The details of the deal haven’t been disclosed (at least not to me), but, since Carroll was one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL, we can assume the new contract isn’t likely to dock his pay.

More from Seattle Seahawks

Carroll is the oldest coach in the NFL at 65, but there’s no way he walks away from a near-perfect situation in Seattle. Since he returned to the NFL after his hugely successful run at USC, he’s won a Super Bowl, came one play away from winning a second, and established the kind of winning culture that other head coaches dream about.

LA Rams fans hoped he might be lured back to his old haunts next year after Jeff Fisher inevitably gets the ax. There aren’t enough emojis in the world to express my reaction to the ridiculousness of that prospect. This extension news shouldn’t surprise them.

Pete Carroll is 60-36 in his tenure with the Seahawks. He has won eight of 12 playoff games with Seattle and he isn’t going anywhere. He has a chance to build (dare I say it?) a dynasty with the Seahawks that few other coaches get. He’ll get that chance when the official terms of this new contract extension are announced. Carroll is likely to remain one of the top-three highest paid coaches in the NFL and he’s worth it for the Hawks’ long term success.

Carroll will likely get a cushy contract, one he rightly deserves. So rejoice, Seahawks fans! Do a shot for Pete Carroll tonight. Hopefully this deal will keep him chomping on his bubble gum on the Seahawks sidelines until he retires.
